Westgate Resorts celebrated the groundbreaking, Dec. 15, 2014, of its $11 million mixed-use retail development at Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa in the heart of the Orlando Tourism Corridor. The retail center – Westgate Lakes Retail Village – will be home to an award-winning steakhouse, state-of-the-art meeting and event space, sports bar, retail shops and parking garage.

The groundbreaking drew travel industry leaders, government officials and Westgate Resort executives. Joining the company’s founder and chief executive, David Siegel, were: George Aguel, president and chief executive, Visit Orlando, the destination’s official tourism association; Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs; and Orange County Commissioner Scott Boyd.

“We’re excited about bringing high-quality entertainment, dining and meeting options to our Westgate guests and Central Florida visitors,” Siegel said. “This is a great day for Westgate Resorts. We’re creating jobs and adding rich amenities that will make our owners very happy and encourage more people to buy timeshares. Our beautiful new retail village is good for owners, good for the local economy and good for the industry.

“Westgate is on a roll,” Siegel continued. “The stock market is doing well, people are feeling confident, and they’re purchasing timeshares. This has been a great year for us, and 2015 is looking even more promising.”

The complex will house Westgate Resort’s new fine dining concept, Edge Steakhouse; Drafts Sports Bar & Grill; shops; 32,000 square feet of flexible meeting and banquet space; a full-service marketplace grocery store; game room; bowling alley; and parking garage with 450-plus spaces. The parking garage will be available for use as early as May 2015, and Edge Steakhouse and Drafts Sports Bar & Grill are slated to open December 2015.

This will be the first Edge Steakhouse in Florida and the second nationwide. The original Edge, at Westgate Park City Resort & Spa, Utah, has earned numerous accolades, including awards from TripAdvisor, OpenTable, Best of State for Utah Dining, Wine Spectator and the Park City Record newspaper. The unique dining concept takes traditional American steakhouse cuisine to a new level of sophistication with delicious twists. Think American Kobe beef sashimi and lobster and black truffle risotto. Innovative dishes are complemented by a wine selection of more than 1,000 bottles from six continents.

For more casual fare, Drafts Sports Bar & Grill features handcrafted burgers and gourmet pub food along with an extensive beer and wine list. The restaurant will complement the resort’s on-site, award-winning Westgate Smokehouse Grill.

Westgate Lakes Retail Village’s 32,000 square feet of flexible meeting and banquet space will triple the amount of space available for groups at Westgate Lakes.
