Orlando Arroyo heads Sunset World. He holds a degree in Civil Engineering from The National Autonomous University of México (UNAM) with post-graduate work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Toronto, and Master of Science in Transportation Economics from Carnegie Mellon University.
After starting his career as a consultant engineer in areas of tourism and transportation, Mr. Arroyo was appointed by the Promotion Trust Fund of the Bank of México (INFRATUR) as one of Cancún’s founding personalities, and was actively involved in its planning and construction throughout the early 1970s. Mr. Arroyo was in charge of the development of Puerto Juárez and responsible for the repositioning of Acapulco as a world prime destination. He assisted in the long-term planning of México’s airports, including the expansion of México City’s International Airport.
From 1983 to 1985 he was appointed as General Manager of Cancún within the National Fund for the Development of Tourism (FONATUR), administering the continued development and construction of Cancún.
In 1988 he established a partnership with four collaborators, and together they ventured into timeshare development and membership-based vacation products, building their first hotel, Sunset Royal. Under the visionary leadership of Mr. Arroyo, Sunset World has grown from that one hotel into three other resorts, with more on the way, and a vast collection of vacation service companies.
Mr. Arroyo has held the positions of Vice President of the Association of Hotels of Quintana Roo and President of the National Private Business Council. During his presidency of the Caribbean Coordination Business Board he designed — among other projects — the Cancún beach restoration project and the Economic Development Plan of Quintana Roo, 2025. As hobbies, he enjoys flying his own jet and sailing with friends and family.
