2002, Mercedes Bejarán of the cloistered nuns of the Carmelite Order in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, received support from the bishop to open a home to care for the needs of handicapped children in the area. Casa Nazareth was known throughout the region for its love and specialized care for children with a variety of conditions ranging from autism and Down’s Syndrome to Cerebral Palsy and various mental and physical illnesses.
